It has been said that music can lift your mood and make you happier. Listening to music releases the feel good chemical dopamine.
There have been a million times that I have heard a song; smiled and shouted ‘I love this song’. There is no doubt songs can give me the warmest feeling.
Of course, this can be because a particular song takes you back to a certain time in your life. I heard James Morrison (don’t judge!) the other day, and it took me back to being in my room during first year of university, the sun was shining, I had just made friends with a great group of friends in the block next door and I was happy. Hearing this song, had made me feel like I was living that moment again.
It isn’t always the memory though; take Mark Ronsons’ Uptown Funk. This song doesn’t take me back to a particular moment, but it does make me feel happy and like I can take on whatever day is ahead of me.
I have heard people say that it needs to be an uplifting happy song. I don’t agree with this, if the song makes YOU feel happy, then it counts. A study published in the journal PLOS ONE, by Liila Taruffi and Stefan Koelsch of the Free University of Berlin surveyed 722 people from around the world. They concluded that listening to sad music has a significant positive effect on emotional well-being. (Other studies find that the music needs to be upbeat..humphhh you can’t win!)
Why don’t you try it? Either in the morning to give you that well needed lift or even if you are just feeling a bit blue. Pick out your favourite song, or a song that you used to love when you were younger. You might be surprised how it makes you feel!
One study suggests that you need to be aware that you are trying to make yourself happier when listening to your ‘happy music’ for it to have the desired effect. So dedicate your attention to your song, even if you are doing something else at the same time, surely giving even 70% of your attention to your chosen music can help.
My top 3 ‘happy songs’ of the moment are:
· Chelsea Basham’s – I make my own sunshine. Check it out.
· Mark Ronson ft Bruno Mars – Uptown Funk
· Wilson Phillips – Hold on
One problem I have is thinking about which song I want to listen to, if you have any tips on what songs make you happy, please share below, I would love to give them a try!
